Ghanaian artist Stonebwoy, participated in a panel discussion at Howard University’s Warner Music Blavatnik Center for Music Business on September 26, 2024. The multi-award-winning musician shared his journey in the music industry, shedding light on how he navigates global success while staying grounded in his Afro-dancehall and reggae roots.

During the panel discussion, Stonebwoy made a statement that resonated with many in attendance. “The talent we possess doesn’t belong to us, it comes through us, but it belongs to humanity,” he said. His words set the tone for a dialogue centered around duality, culture, social justice, and the importance of staying well-rounded in an ever-evolving industry.

Stonebwoy’s commitment to his heritage and storytelling is at the core of his artistic expression. His lyrics, often drawing from personal experiences, serve as reflections of societal issues, making his music both relatable and thought-provoking. “We have to pay attention to our own issues and make sure that we’re progressing and excelling,” he emphasized.

This engagement at Howard University aligns seamlessly with the ‘Beyond the Return’ initiative, for how it connects the diaspora to Ghana. Stonebwoy’s appearance highlighted the strong connection between Ghana and the diaspora, using music and the arts as a bridge. As a prominent Ghanaian artist, his influence extends far beyond the borders of his home country. His presence at one of the most respected Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) not only fosters dialogue about African music but also strengthens the connection between Ghana and the African diaspora in the United States.

Stonebwoy’s impact in the diaspora echoes Ghana’s broader initiative to tell its story through the arts, in alignment with the Brand Ghana pillar of Beyond the Return. His commitment to authentic representation of his culture on the global stage contributes to the ongoing effort to position Ghana as a cultural and creative hub. Through his music, Stonebwoy is an ambassador for the country’s rich artistic heritage, showcasing how Ghana can lead global conversations through its unique contributions to the arts.

During the panel, Stonebwoy also spoke about the art of duality—balancing his role as a global superstar and as a graduate student at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, where he studies international relations and diplomacy. His journey exemplifies the versatility and resilience that is often required of artists navigating the international music scene. As he continues to grow professionally, his studies reflect his desire to remain grounded and well-rounded, constantly seeking new ways to serve as a role model for others.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where Howard students eagerly sought advice from Stonebwoy on breaking into the music industry. For many, the opportunity to engage with such a globally recognized figure was inspiring. Ghanaian student Jesse Panyin Awuah reflected, “It was a nice experience having Howard bring in a Ghanaian artist to speak to the students because we barely see African music artist representation in school.” Stonebwoy’s appearance highlighted the power of cultural authenticity in the music industry. By remaining true to his roots, he has not only inspired students but also shown that Ghana’s story can be told through its artists, who carry the nation’s heritage to the global stage.

Wanderlust Ghana is committed to highlighting Africa as a destination of beauty, history, and opportunity, proving that the road less traveled can indeed lead to remarkable destinations.

The journey officially begins on September 30, and if their past adventures are anything to go by, Wanderlust Ghana will continue to captivate the world, one kilometer at a time.

Frederick Douglass Academy VII in Brooklyn, New York, recently made history with their first-ever cultural immersion trip to Ghana. Students, staff, and families embarked on this amazing journey with the help of African Roots Travel and Birthright Africa, and it turned out to be a life-changing experience for everyone involved.

Maurice Cheetham, CEO of African Roots Travel, summed up the trip beautifully, “It’s all about creating a bond with the motherland and connecting with peers in Ghana.” And that’s exactly what happened. This wasn’t just a trip – it was an opportunity for students to experience a deep connection to their roots and learn about the rich culture of Ghana firsthand.

The trip was planned for months by Bijourn Jordan, travel coordinator for The Brownsville Abroad Travel Program, and Frederick Douglass Academy VII Principal Tamika Mathison. Over nine days and eight nights, students got to immerse themselves in Ghana’s culture, history, and traditions. According to Principal Mathison, the trip was “priceless” and something the students will remember forever.

One of the most powerful moments of the trip was the visit to Assin Manso, a site tied to the transatlantic slave trade. The group visited the Slave River, where enslaved Africans took their last bath before being shipped across the Atlantic. Standing there, the students honored their ancestors by placing a wreath at the site – a symbolic way of connecting the past with the present and remembering the resilience of those who came before them.

The trip also included a visit to the Cape Coast Slave Dungeon, where students saw firsthand the cramped, dark cells where enslaved Africans were held. Standing at the infamous “Door of No Return,” the students reflected on the unimaginable hardships their ancestors faced. It was an emotional moment, but also one that helped them understand the strength and courage it took to survive.

Another highlight of the trip was the day spent at Ordorgonnor Senior High School in Accra. Through the Art Cares Foundation’s School for a Day program, students from Frederick Douglass Academy VII got to experience life in a Ghanaian classroom. They participated in traditional music, dance, and drama, and even picked up some new language skills. This day helped the students connect with their Ghanaian peers and see how education brings people together no matter where you are.

Music was another big part of the experience. At Prince Media Studio in Accra, the students worked with Ghanaian producers David Bolton and DJ Fortune to create their own Afrobeat tracks. The collaboration blended Brooklyn and Accra influences, and the students got to showcase their creativity in a new way. According to Ms. Revlyn Phillips, the students really pushed themselves and embraced the whole process.

The group also made time for giving back. They visited the Jack and Jill Brooklyn STEM Center in Mamprobi, Accra, where they worked with local students to build bamboo Bluetooth speakers. It was a hands-on project that encouraged teamwork and creativity. Principal Mathison even donated two desktop computers to the Africa STEM Academy, adding to the positive impact of their visit.

The trip wrapped up with a special Ghana Family Day in the Mamprobi neighborhood of Accra. Students were welcomed into the homes of local families, where they learned about Ga traditions, shared meals, and participated in a naming ceremony. Assistant Principal Gail Murray said the warm welcome from the families made them feel like they were truly coming home.

Reflecting on the whole experience, Maurice Cheetham said, “It’s an honor to create a homecoming for these scholars. The stories and experiences they’ve had here will be passed down for generations.” The collaboration between Frederick Douglass Academy VII, African Roots Travel, and Birthright Africa set the stage for a new kind of cultural exchange. It wasn’t just about learning – it was about creating lasting connections and a deeper understanding of where they come from.

As the students head back to Brooklyn, they’re carrying with them memories, lessons, and a renewed sense of pride in their heritage. This first trip to Ghana has opened the door to future journeys and continues to show the power of cultural exploration. For anyone considering a similar trip, Frederick Douglass Academy VII’s experience is proof of the profound impact of reconnecting with Africa.

“Coming From America”: Ghana’s Legacy of Welcoming the Diaspora Continues

A new reality-TV docuseries, “Coming From America” premieres on September 5th, 2024, on the streaming platform Max. Viewers are invited to witness African Americans who made the decision to move to Ghana and explore what it truly means to come home to Africa. For those seeking peace, connection, and a deeper sense of belonging, Ghana continues to stand as a welcoming home for the diaspora, embodying the pan-African ideals that have shaped its history.

“Coming From America” is more than just a reality show—it’s a powerful chronicle of resilience, cultural discovery, and the pursuit of a dream to reconnect with Africa. The series follows four families, including the Davis, Smiley, Kelly, and Jones families, as they navigate the complexities of building new lives in Ghana.

Ghana has long been known as the ‘Gateway to Africa’ and has historically been a place for the African diaspora, offering a place of refuge, reconnection, and renewal. As a country that has always embraced its pan-African identity, Ghana’s commitment to welcoming people of African descent from across the globe reached new heights with the “Year of Return” in 2019. This monumental initiative marked 400 years since the first documented enslaved Africans were taken to the United States, and it sparked a global movement, inspiring thousands of African Americans and other members of the diaspora to explore the possibility of returning to the continent.

Among those who answered this call are Tony and Ayo Jones, an African American couple from Houston, Texas. Their journey to Ghana is captured in the new Max Original docuseries. Interestingly, Ayo is half African American and half Ghanaian. Her experience has a connection to both Ghana and America. The series offers a candid look at the challenges and triumphs they and others faced as they made Ghana their new home, showcasing the raw, authentic experiences of adjusting to a new culture, system, and way of life.

For people of African descent, moving to Ghana often represents a path to peace of mind—a chance to escape the stresses and racial tensions of the West and embrace a culture that feels like home. However, the transition comes with its own set of challenges. “Coming From America” portrays these challenges with honesty, capturing the reality of adapting to new systems, customs, and ways of life. The family’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that while returning to one’s roots can be deeply fulfilling, it demands resilience and an open heart.

“Coming From America” premieres this Thursday September 5th, 2024, on Max.

As part of the ongoing 2024 Emancipation Day Celebration, the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) took a significant step in strengthening its partnership with the Oguaa Traditional Area by paying a courtesy call on the Omanhene, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, the Paramount Chief of Cape Coast. This important meeting took place on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024, at his palace in Cape Coast.

The courtesy call was a gesture of respect and appreciation for Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II’s unwavering support and collaboration in promoting tourism and preserving cultural heritage in the Central Region. The GTA delegation was warmly received by the Omanhene, highlighting the deep-rooted connection between the traditional leadership and the authority responsible for advancing Ghana’s tourism agenda.

During the meeting, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II emphasized the importance of preserving Ghanaian culture, particularly through education. He called on the GTA to integrate more educational programs into the Emancipation Day activities, ensuring that the youth are educated about Ghanaian heritage and culture. His appeal reflects a broader vision of empowering the next generation with the knowledge of their rich cultural history, which is crucial for maintaining the country’s identity.

As part of the Emancipation Day activities, a significant event will take place this evening, July 31st, with the Reverential Night in Cape Coast. This solemn event will bring together people from all walks of life, including traditional leaders, Ghanaians, and members of the African diaspora, for a candlelight vigil. The vigil will proceed through the streets of Cape Coast, ending at the historic Cape Coast Castle (dungeons).

The gathering at Cape Coast Castle will be a powerful moment of reflection and remembrance. Traditional leaders will meet with the diaspora and other attendees to pour libations, offer prayers, and honor the memory of those who lost their lives and those who, through their resilience, survived the atrocities of the transatlantic slave trade.

The collaboration between the GTA and the Oguaa Traditional Area highlights the importance of unity in celebrating and preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage. These types of partnerships and events, help support Ghana’s long-standing vision of Pan-Africanism. The country continues to honor its past while educating future generations, ensuring that the legacy of those who endured the horrors of slavery is never forgotten, so that it never happens again.

Ghana has long been known as a Pan-African nation providing a sense of hope for those in the African diaspora, serving as a gateway to the continent and a symbol of resilience. On August 1st, the nation will once again stand at the forefront of commemorating Emancipation Day, a day that marks the end of slavery in the British colonies in 1834. This impacted 800,000 enslaved Africans in the Caribbean, Canada, South America and Africa.

In the days leading up to Emancipation Day, the community of Assin Praso has been a focal point for these reflections, as traditional leaders, government officials, and members of the global African family gathered to honor those who endured the horrors of slavery. The Ghana Tourism Authority, along with the Beyond the Return Secretariat, led a delegation to Assin Praso on July 29th, where they participated in a series of events steeped in historical significance.

The day’s events included a sad re-enactment of the captured Africans’ journey, where they were brought down the River Pra, mistreated, and prepared for the grueling march to Assin Manso for their last bath and eventually Cape Coast and Elmina, where they would be sold into the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The re-enactment served as a sobering reminder of the unimaginable hardships endured by those who were enslaved.

At the heart of the commemoration was a wreath-laying ceremony at the mass gravesite in Assin Praso, where Africans who died in captivity or escaping were buried. This act of remembrance was led by notable figures, including the Board Chairperson of Ghana Tourism Authority, Hon. Seth Adjei Baah and the Deputy CEO of Ghana Tourism Authority, Ekow Sampson. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Youth of Africa, the Global African Family, the Government and people of Ghana, and Traditional Rulers, symbolizing a collective respect for the ancestors who suffered during this dark chapter of history.

The celebration of Emancipation Day continued with a traditional Durbar of Chiefs, where traditional rulers gathered and performers showcased Ghana’s rich cultural heritage through drumming and dancing. The sounds of the drums and the energy of the dancers brought to life the resilience and spirit of the African people, offering a contrast to the somber reflections of the day.

The Emancipation Day celebrations are far from over. The public is invited to join in the ongoing observances in Cape Coast on the night of July 31st for Reverential Night, a solemn evening where participants are asked to wear white as they pay homage to our lost ancestors. On August 1st, the celebration moves to Assin Manso, the site of the Slave River and Ancestral Burial Grounds, where a series of activities will take place to mark this important historical day.

Ghana’s recognition of Emancipation Day is more than just a national event; it is a call to the African diaspora worldwide to remember, to honor, and to continue the fight for liberation.

Yesterday marked the official commissioning and ribbon cutting of the Salaga Slave Market and Heritage Site. This monumental event brought together government officials, community leaders, and locals to celebrate the reopening of a site that plays a crucial role in the history of the transatlantic slave trade. Salaga was a significant point on the slave route where captured enslaved Africans were sold and later transported to the coast and trafficked to the Americas.

The Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, highlighted the importance of this site, stating, “The commissioning of the Salaga Slave Market and Heritage Site is more than a mere remembrance of the past; it is an acknowledgment of the role that slavery played in shaping our world today.” He made these remarks during the commissioning ceremony held on July 22, 2024, in Salaga.

The Salaga Slave Market dates back to the 18th century and served as an essential hub during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade era. It also functioned as an outpost for the movement of slaves along the trans-Saharan routes. Visiting this heritage site offers a profound opportunity to understand and honour this significant part of African history. It is a place where the stories of those who were captured and enslaved come to life, offering visitors a chance to reflect on the past and its impact on the present.

The reopening of the Salaga Slave Market & Heritage Site aligns with the “Promote Pan-African Heritage & Innovation” pillar of the Beyond the Return initiative. This initiative seeks to highlight Ghana’s rich heritage, history, pan-Africanism and also to promote tourism in other regions of Ghana. “Let us seize this occasion to promote tourism in the Savannah Region and across Ghana,” said Hon. Minister Mercer.
