Launched in 2019 as part of ‘The Year of Return,’ December in GH has become a cultural and tourism cornerstone. Visitors from around the world eagerly immerse themselves in our heritage, arts, and entertainment scene. This year’s events promise an extraordinary experience, allowing exploration of Ghana’s beauty while fostering connections with local communities throughout the festive season.

Ghanaian-American NFL linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, plays for the Cleveland Browns and has made a name for himself both on and off the football field. Most recently he was awarded the most stylish NFL player by GQ Magazine. He has fans around the world who have admiration for him because he is showcasing African culture through his fashion choices when walking through the stadium and on his social media.

He recently returned to Ghana to continue with his annual NKWA football camp which took place March 2-3, 2024 at Eden Heights Sports Complex. Through his NKWA Ghana Camp, Owusu-Koramoah aims to develop a strong culture of athleticism, teamwork, and leadership among Ghanaian youth, utilising the power of sports as a catalyst for positive change. NKWA is an acronym for Natural, Knowledge, Wisdom and Affirmation. All elements he uses in the camp to teach skills to young people.

In partnership with GUBA Enterprise, Owusu-Koramoah brought a delegation with him that included friends, teammates, coaches and family to experience Ghana and participate in this important camp that would provide a platform for young athletes across the country to hone their skills, learn valuable lessons and forge lifelong friendships.

The camp aligns with the Beyond the Return campaign’s ‘Give Back Ghana’ pillar which focuses on identifying initiatives that connect the diaspora and Ghana through acts of service that give back to the community. This camp connected the youth with professional athletes who shared skills for the betterment of young Ghanaians.

Owusu-Koramoah, who rose to fame in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, expressed his deep-seated connection to Ghana and his determination to make a meaningful impact in the lives of its youth. “Ghana has always been a part of me, and I am honoured to give back to the community,” remarked Owusu-Koramoah. Through the NKWA Ghana Camp, he hopes to instil confidence, discipline, and a sense of purpose in these athletes.

The camp featured a series of intensive training sessions led by Owusu-Koramoah himself, along with experienced players, coaches and mentors including; Matthew Adams (Cleveland Browns), David Bell (Cleveland Browns), Amari Cooper (Cleveland Browns), Navarro Price (Virginia Union University), Ogbo Okoronkow (Cleveland Browns), David Grimes (Coaching), Kyle Wimberly, Grant Delpit (Cleveland Browns), Asmar Bilal (NFL Free Agent), Brandon Marshall (Super Bowl 50 Champion), and Elijah Moore (Cleveland Browns). From mastering the fundamentals of football to engaging in team-building exercises, the participants embraced each challenge with unwavering determination and enthusiasm.

Beyond the athletic drills, the NKWA Ghana Camp emphasised the importance of education and personal development. Participants were encouraged to prioritise academic, spiritual and physical excellence and pursue their dreams both on and off the field. The camp teaches them that sports is not just about winning games; it’s about building character and resilience. Owusu-Koramoah said he wants these kids to know that with hard work and dedication, they can achieve anything they set their minds to.

As the NKWA Ghana Camp drew to a close, participants competed in a flag football tournament using the skills they learned over the two days. The teams were all named after a significant person in history from Africa and the African diaspora with team names including; Queen Nanny (Jamaica), Sanite Belair (Haiti), Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana), Marcus Garvey (Jamaica), Amilcar Cabral (Cape Verde/Guinea Bissaue), Mansa Musa (Mali), Imhotep (Egypt), Patrice Lumumba (DRC), Ida B. Wells (US) and Yaa Asantewaa (Ghana).

Team Yaa Asantewaa, led by Owusu-Koramoah himself, were crowned champions of the day! Awards were given to recognize those who excelled and words of wisdom were shared for the participants to take away. The experience served as a transformative moment for all the players.

Looking ahead, Owusu-Koramoah remains committed to supporting the youth of Ghana and empowering them to reach their full potential. Through initiatives like the NKWA Ghana Camp, he hopes to leave a lasting legacy of positivity and inspiration for generations to come.

In a major announcement at the World Economic Forum, International advocacy organization Global Citizen, creative imprint pgLang, and the Presidents of Ghana and Rwanda revealed that Accra, Ghana, is set to join Kigali as a host city for this year’s Move Afrika: A Global Citizen Experience tour. Kendrick Lamar’s headline performance was accompanied by a stellar lineup including Zuchu, Bruce Melodie, DJ TOXXYK, Sherrie Silver, Ariel Wayz, Kivumbi King, and Bruce The 1st.

Renowned environmental advocate and former US Vice President Al Gore spearheaded the 54th Climate Reality Leadership Training program, which took place in Accra, Ghana, from November 13–15, 2023. This event marked a pivotal step in the global initiative to educate individuals worldwide about the realities of climate change and potential solutions.

Vice President Gore underscored the significance of West Africa in the battle against climate change, describing it as a region particularly susceptible to the impacts of the climate crisis. He expressed optimism about West Africa’s potential to lead the Sustainability Revolution in Africa.

During an impactful two-hour presentation at the Climate Reality Leadership Training, VP Al Gore emphasized the urgent need for a united global response to climate change. The event, organized by The Climate Reality Project and featuring insights from Phyllis Cuttino, the President, and CEO of the organization, shed light on Africa’s unique challenges and its pivotal role in combating the climate crisis.

Cuttino revealed a stark truth—Africa contributes less than 3% of global carbon emissions, yet it disproportionately bears the brunt of climate change effects. With 600 million people lacking access to electricity, the region faces unique challenges in achieving sustainable development. Despite these obstacles, Ghana is striving for 100% access to electricity by 2030.

A significant disparity exists in clean energy jobs, with Africa having only 300,000 out of the global 12 million. Despite being home to 60% of the world’s premier solar energy resource, Africa currently utilizes only 1% of solar energy. The Climate Reality Project, initiated in 2006, aims to rectify these imbalances and catalyze global solutions to the climate crisis. The organization has trained nearly 50,000 Climate Reality leaders worldwide, with 2000 leaders based in Africa. Goals include reducing global gas emissions, building a clean energy future, financing a just transition, countering misinformation, and strengthening international cooperation.

Al Gore’s keynote address delved into the alarming reality of climate change, highlighting human impact and presenting data revealing that 21 of the 22 hottest years on record occurred since 2000. He explored regional climate trends, citing Ghana’s warmest October on record and warning of the increasing frequency of dangerously high temperatures with potential devastating consequences for West African communities by 2050.

The link between climate change, deforestation, and extreme weather events was emphasized. Disasters such as floods and storms displaced hundreds of thousands in countries like Somalia, Ghana, Libya, Senegal, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Sierra Leone. West Africa’s deadly storms were found to be 80 times more likely due to human-caused climate change.

Al Gore highlighted the vulnerability of West Africa to rising sea levels, affecting 117 million people by 2030. The global food system’s inequalities were exposed, with North and South America experiencing surpluses while Africa faced deficits, risking a multi-bread basket failure.

Burning fossil fuels contributes to air pollution, causing severe health issues. Alarming statistics revealed that 8.7 million people die annually due to air pollution. In Ghana, air pollution is projected to quadruple by 2050, posing significant risks to the population.

Al Gore stressed the urgency of taking action to combat climate change, discussing the economic and environmental costs of the climate crisis. He emphasized the need for increased climate finance in Africa and the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar and wind.

The West Africa Climate Reality Leadership Training event provided a sobering look at the challenges and opportunities in the region’s fight against climate change. The call to action is clear—a collective effort is required to address disparities, implement sustainable solutions, and mitigate the severe consequences of the climate crisis.

The Ghana Police Headquarters recognizes the significance of these celebrations for promoting tourism and showcasing Ghanaian heritage to the world. Commissioner of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno said they have done several stakeholder engagements over the years but this was the first of its kind to have a meeting dedicated to speaking with event organisers about the safety and security of Ghana during the holiday season. “As you prepare to organise your events, this is an opportunity to meet our commanders with Ghana Police,” he said while noting they were all ready to take suggestions from all in attendance.

During the meeting, participants engaged in open discussions, sharing insights, expectations and asking questions for this year’s December in GH activities. The Inspector General of Police emphasized the vital role of collaborative efforts in maintaining public safety and urged event organizers to comply with security guidelines to ensure smooth operations.

The CEO of Ghana Tourism Authority thanked the police for opening up to have a meeting with everyone. “We don’t take it lightly that you’ve given us the opportunity to interact with you and share some of the experiences that we have.”

To enhance security measures, the Ghana Police Headquarters will work closely with the Ghana Tourism Authority and Beyond the Return Secretariat, establishing effective communication channels and deploying dedicated security personnel at various event venues. This collaboration aims to address potential challenges, mitigate risks, and ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants.

The Ghana Tourism Authority is committed to promoting and sustaining the growth of tourism in Ghana, and their partnership with the Ghana Police Headquarters underscores their dedication to a safe and secure environment for visitors and locals alike. Beyond the Return Secretariat, known for its efforts in promoting the initiative, will play a crucial role in ensuring smooth coordination between the various event organizers and authorities for a seamless December in GH experience.

Speaking about the collaboration, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare said he was happy to work hand-in-hand with the Ghana Tourism Authority, Beyond the Return Secretariat, and event organizers to create a safe and secure environment for all December in GH activities. This partnership demonstrates the joint commitment to showcasing the best of Ghanaian culture while ensuring the well-being of Ghanaian citizens and visitors.

Event organizers whose activities have been approved and endorsed for the December in GH festivities expressed their gratitude for the support and guidance provided by the Ghana Police Headquarters. They were also given the floor to ask questions directly to the police department. Some of the major concerns included traffic, poorly lit areas that make people susceptable to crime, and police misconduct. Robert Klah from Charterhouse Productions said it would be good to work with governmental agencies to map out areas of security concerns due to street lights not functioning, in order to give people a sense of safety at night.

“We are going to make Ghana proud, for the rest of the world to witness about us,” IGP, Dr. Dampare said. He reassured everyone that the police department is committed to security protocols and will collaborate closely with all stakeholders to deliver exceptional standards when it comes to a safe and secure environment.

As we anticipate the December in GH celebrations, let us embrace the unity and vibrancy that makes Ghana such a special destination. The collaborative efforts of the Ghana Police Headquarters, Ghana Tourism Authority, Beyond the Return Secretariat, and event organizers aim to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants, setting the stage for unforgettable experiences in Ghana.

The 13th Chale Wote Street Art Festival moved to the iconic Black Star Square this year. It was a dynamic celebration of contemporary art, from Monday, August 21 to Sunday, August 27, 2023. The festival is one of Africa’s most vibrant street art events. With a theme rooted in commemorating over a decade of iconic public art interventions by African artists, the 2023 Chale Wote Street Art Festival marked a significant milestone. The term “Chale Wote,” which translates to “Friend, let’s go” in Ga, the language of Accra’s indigenous people, has become synonymous with flip-flops. The festival, extending its reach beyond creative boundaries, aimed to cultivate a broader audience for the arts in West Africa.

For the first time, the festival shifted its venue to Osu, one of Accra’s oldest neighborhoods dating back to the early 19th century. Osu, a vital part of the city’s commercial and cultural landscape, boasts a rich history rooted in the settlement of Ga fishermen in the late 18th century. The iconic Osu Castle, built by the Danish in the 17th century, stands as a testament to the community’s historical significance.

The festival’s new perimeter at the Black Star Square in Osu featured open-air mural exhibitions by leading Ghanaian and international artists. The artwork drew inspiration from the rebellion of enslaved Afro-Brazilians in 1835 Salvador Bahia and their triumphant return to present-day Ghana, Togo, and Nigeria. The narrative unfolded as a musical theatre piece titled “MEMORY MOVEMENT FREEDOM,” performed by community-based performance groups, dance troupes, and brass bands.

Highlights of the festival included live murals by the Ghanaian art collective AFUABE, detailing the Gold Coast’s resistance against colonial invasions. The program encompassed performance art, graffiti, music stages featuring 120 musicians and bands, LABS, salons, design, photography, processions, street theater, and the SHIKA SHIKA Art Fair, showcasing independent artists at the Christianborg Castle.

Chale Wote Street Art Festival also incorporated the Chale Wote Film LABS and knowledge-sharing salons, offering digital art and photography training sessions. The festival provided an opportunity for visitors to book walking tours exploring historical sites and buildings within the Osu community.

The globally acclaimed Highlife Café made its debut at the Black Star Square, complemented by the Accra Cookout, serving the city’s favorite dishes and unique delicacies. Supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture, Ghana Tourism Authority, and other partners, the Chale Wote Street Art Festival at the Black Star Square and Christianborg Castle became an unforgettable multi-disciplinary art experience, bringing together the industry’s biggest acts and fostering a deeper connection to independent art production in Africa.
